Dubbed the “jewel of Silicon Valley,” the historic San Jose Civic was celebrated with a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 5, 2012, in downtown San Jose. Various Silicon Valley VIPs and dignitaries, along with San Jose Mayor, Chuck Reed, CEO of Team San Jose, Bill Sherry, and CEO of Nederlander Concerts, Alex Hodges, were in attendance to help celebrate the reopening of the newly renovated venue.
This historic San Jose City landmark, built in 1934 in Spanish mission-style architecture with the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. T.S. Montgomery, has undergone a $15 million renovation. Through this investment, the San Jose Civic has received a facelift with the addition of new seats, new lighting and new sound. With its new interior façade and amenities, the San Jose Civic will continue to host and attract talents such as comedian, George Lopez, whose name will be added to the list of high-profile performers who have graced the stage with their immense talent throughout the decades.
Mr. Lopez was to be in attendance to assist in the cutting of the ribbon, but unfortunately had to remain in Los Angeles due to airplane maintenance. However, Mr. Lopez performed for a sold-out audience on Saturday October 6, 2012, and was the first act to perform in the newly renovated Civic.
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests had the opportunity to stroll the new auditorium and had exclusive access to see all the new renovations both in front, on top, and backstage.
While entering the auditorium, the majestic lighting and smoky ambiance created a quiet excitement as the spirit of past performers was in the air. One could almost imagine the sounds of music reverberating off the walls and what it would have been like watching his or her favorite act on stage. If the walls could talk, they would tell stories of unforgettable and historic performances that thousands have had the privilege of experiencing firsthand.
Guests were also treated to high-end confections and hors d’oeuvres that were served in the dressing room, VIP room, Sky lounge, and on stage.
A beautiful dessert spread was laid out on the stage where legendary acts such as Barbra Streisand, Joan Jett, The Rolling Stones, and Frank Sinatra had performed atop in years past.
While guests enjoyed their fare, they mixed-and-mingled with one another and discussed the beauty of the venue and magnitude of the renovation.
Upon the conclusion of the event, those who wanted to stay a bit longer and peruse the various rooms and theater were welcome to stay.
With the new renovation of the San Jose Civic, Silicon Valley will continue to grow as a city where innovation and imagination reign but where art and entertainment also have a growing presence and historic root.
