The characters of Mystic Falls supernaturally graced the Bay Area with their presence, as they took over the Hyatt SFO for a two-day Vampire Diaries Convention. Awaiting their imminent arrival with massive anticipation, fans of the show lined up to purchase photo-op tickets so they could get “bitten” by—have their photo taken with their favorite vampires—Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder)—and other characters from the show: Dr. Meredith Fell (Torrey DeVitto), Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic), Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino), and Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig).
As Twihards pine for their favorite leading man—Edward or Jacob—wishing with all their might that they could be in Bella’s place, so to do the Vampire Diaries fans, as they dawned garb reflecting their favorite vampire—Stefan or Damon.
While fans showed their loyalty to either Salvatore brother, they did so by a perusing the various vendors selling posters and signed photos and memorabilia from the show, along with some unusual and unique souvenirs—plastic pumpkins carved with the likeness of various Vampire Diaries characters. How would you like a lantern with Damon’s glowing face putting you to sleep every night? I’m sure many female…and some male fans would.
The hosts of the event were two very talented sisters, Hilly and Hannah Hindi, from the popular online parody show, The Hillywood Show. Hilly, dressed as Katherine (Nina Dobrev), welcomed the audience, and introduced their Vampire Diaries parody. After the showing of their film, Torrey DeVitto who plays Dr. Meredith Fell, came to stage as fans welcomed her with screams and chants. As with all the actors present, fans had the opportunity to ask them questions about the characters they play as well as some appropriate personal questions like, “Who would you like to work with?” or “In what ways are you like the character you play?” All actors graciously answered as many questions as time permitted, and were very personable and engaging with the audience.
Some fans also showed their appreciation for their favorite actor by giving them homemade posters with photos of the actors in character on the show.
There were many fun activities that event-goers had the chance to partake in, like a Vampire Diaries Costume Parade, The Vampire Diaries Trivia Game, and also an auction, where super-fans could bet on posters, signed photos, t-shirts, and canvases with the likeness of their favorite characters. One ultimate super-fan bet as high as $550.00 for a canvas with the picture of Stefan and Damon Salvatore (Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder). Now that’s what I call a hardcore super-fan.
The most anticipated part of day one of the two-day convention was fans awaiting Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore), Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore), and Steven R. McQueen (Jeremy Gilbert) to take the stage. Many female fans screamed with excitement as they could no longer contain their composure knowing that they would soon see the actors who bring their favorite characters to life. As Hilly introduced the three actors to the stage, the fans went wild with excitement. Many were also heard yelling “Take your shirt off”; that wishful statement could have been directed to any of the three actors, who are all quite the eye-candy if I do say so myself. Once the crowd settled down, all three actors acknowledged their fans’ enthusiasm and greeted them with appreciation.
It was interesting to notice the chemistry between the three actors. It was evident that they were very comfortable with each other, and their closeness as fellow actors and friendship off the set was apparent. They easily joked with each other and also poked fun at one another. And aside from answering the questions provided by the fans, they also provided anecdotes about themselves, and Steven R. McQueen even recited some Shakespeare…a true actor’s actor.
The Vampire Diaries Convention proved to be one that the fans will not soon forget. After all, no TV show can be successful without the support of its fans…and the Vampire Diaries fans are quite loyal, passionate, and enthusiastic about the love-triangle between the three unlikely characters of Stefan, Elena, and Damon. So hold tight TVD fans, the new season is quickly approaching, and you will no longer thirst for your craving of TVD.
